A key word comes to mind when you think of the 2013-2014 year in the Ponderosa FFA Chapter; growth. From speaking competitions to agricultural projects, the Ponderosa FFA has provided excellent opportunities for its members to grow.

The Future Farmers of America, also known as the FFA, promotes premier leadership, personal growth and career success through vocational agriculture education. The Ponderosa FFA Chapter is celebrating its 50th year anniversary and is one of the 7,570 FFA Chapters across the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and is home to a relatively small fraction of the organization's over half a million members.

The Ponderosa FFA Chapter has offered many events and fundraisers for its members to participate in over the past year. In mid-September, 30 freshmen students traveled to attend GLC (Greenhand Leadership Conference) where they learned new leadership skills and more about the FFA. Some older members attended MFE (Made for Excellence) and ALA (Advanced Leadership Academy) in January to develop their leadership skills and meet members from around the state.

Additionally, Ponderosa FFA members have competed in public speaking competitions including FFA Creed and Extemporaneous Speaking. This year the Ponderosa FFA Chapter recieved the largest participation in speaking competitions from first and second year members than they have had in years. The Sacramento Sectional Public Speaking Contest was held on January 29th, and two students from the Ponderosa FFA Chapter moved on to the Regional speaking contest.

The Ponderosa FFA Chapter has conducted many fundraisers throughout the year. These included a Christmas tree sale, a Benefit Auction and three Drive-Thru BBQs. One of the chapter's most popular fundraisers was the Kiss the Pig fundraiser, where a teacher was required to kiss a pig if their designated piggy bank had the most money donated to it by the end of a week.

Aside from the events and fundraisers members participate in, they also work to maintain and complete their SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) Projects. Students can run their own agricultural business, raise a livestock project, cultivate a garden, work for an agricultural business or even conduct an agricultural research project. But the SAE possibilities do not end there. Many things that pertain to agriculture can be completed as an SAE, so students have a wide spectrum to choose from.

Students who own Livestock SAE Projects have th opportunity to show them at the El Dorado County Fair in mid-June. Anybody may come to the El Dorado County Fair and bid on an animal at auction. The 2014 El Dorado County Fair will be held at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds on June 12th-June 15th. The members of the Ponderosa FFA Chapter greatly appreciate the wonderful support that has been received at fair each year that has kept the Ponderosa FFA program going strong!
