Elderly Diamond Springs couple found with serious injuries identified

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office identified two elderly victims injured in an assault in their Diamond Springs home Wednesday morning.

Sheriff's Lt. Tom Murdoch said 91-year-old Gerald Holderman underwent surgery for a possible gunshot wound. His wife, 82-year-old Faye Holderman, suffered injuries to her head and face. The couple was transported to a Placerville hospital for care.

Thursday afternoon, the Holdermans' family said they were optimistic about the couple's recoveries. Faye was sitting up in bed and talking and Gerald was "looking better" after surgery, his son said.

Gerald, a World War II veteran, had surgery for what doctors think is a gunshot wound.

Gerald and his wife just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

A news release from the sheriff's office on Wednesday stated dispatchers took a 911 call at 8:43 a.m. from a woman who sounded in distress. She said she and her husband had been held hostage since before midnight Tuesday and were injured. She was unable to continue talking on the phone.

Deputies arriving to a residence on the 500 block of Arlette Lane found Faye down and injured on the living room floor. Gerald was also found injured in the home.

Sheriff's detectives reported finding evidence of forced entry at the home. The house wasn't ransacked and it wasn't clear if anything was taken. Why the couple was targeted and held hostage for nine hours wasn't known.

Neighbors were deeply disturbed about the attack.

"To have something like that happen to them is just horrible," Cecil Cook said. "They were real good neighbors."

"I don't get why someone would do that to them," Hailey Jones said. "It was really sad because they're so sweet and so kind. And they are such a cute couple together."

Anyone with information about this crime was asked to contact Det. Ken Barber at (530) 642-4710 or Det. James Peterson at (530) 642-4713.
