El Dorado Passport Weekend: Sommelier picks for Sierra Vista Winery

Family owned and operated, Sierra Vista winery is one of the 26 wineries participating in El Dorado’s Passport weekend April 2 & 3.   Owned by John and Barbara MacCready, the winery crushed their first grapes in 1977 and were the first to plant Syrah in 1979 followed by Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault and Viognier.

“John started the Rhone movement in the El Dorado County area,” said Diana, one of the pourers. 

But it’s not just the wines that keep people coming back to visit the winery again and again.  It’s John’s humble personality and his integrity to keep his wines honest.

“John is very salt of the earth.  He leaves his wines alone for the most part, but what I’ve always liked about him is that even in these times of high alcohol and high extraction wines, he’s always made wine for the dinner table,” said Sandford Wragg, sommelier and wine buyer for Tuli Bistro.

I met up with Catherine Enfield at the Sugar and Spice Bakery at 12th and F. Bakery Owner Carissa went about her afternoon as she baked more treats and helped patrons pick out their perfect dessert.

Catherin and I stood in the corner and chatted about her blog Munchie Musings.

“The Munchie Musings is actually an appropriate title because if I had to think of a mission statement it would be thoughts, musings, about food and life,” Catherine explained.

Last weekend, News10 tagged along with sommelier and Tuli Bistro’s wine buyer Sandford Wragg to check out El Dorado’s Passport Weekend.  We checked out five vineyards where Wragg tasted and rated numerous wines. 

Our first vineyard was Auriga Cellars where he rated their Shiraz as your best bet (read his picks here). We then moved onto Miraflores Winery which is owned by Victor and Cheryl Alvarez.

“In this area, 11 wines are rated 11 points and six are ours. All are Zins,” said Vic Alvarez, while pouring for the tasting.  “Our Zinfandels are all varietal. They don’t have sugar.

Organic Living – Is there REALLY a difference between organically grown and conventionally grown foods?  What is conventionally grown food?  It seems that everyone wonders what the answers to these questions are - so you’re not alone!
 
**YES!  There’s definitely a difference between organically grown food and conventionally grown food.  Conventionally grown food is just a fancy name for the ‘regular’ food that you buy at the grocery store with no specifications on the package about it being organic.  To be legally labeled “Certified Organic,” the farms need to be free of herbicides, pesticides and fungicides for a given amount of time.  This amount of time depends on the organic classification that the farm has.  Essentially what this means is that there is nothing added to help the food grow faster, grow larger or fill your body with harmful toxins.  That’s right… harmful toxins

I found out about the Toogood Winery from someone at the station who had been talking about this place for months and because I know he has good taste in wine (and food), I had to check it out. And I wasn’t disappointed.

I went on a Monday afternoon and had the entire place to myself, which is the way I like it because then I can chat up everyone and get a really good tour of the place. And you may want to do this too, because for your $5 tasting fee, you get to taste about six different types of bottled wine, two barrel tastings and a couple of their ports – from the barrel and from the bottle. Plus you get to keep your tasting glass as a souvenir.
