El Dorado County Wines Shine with Double Gold, Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals!

El Dorado County Wines Shine with Double Gold, Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals!

The California State Fair Wine Competition has been judging California wines since 1854 - it is 157 years of evaluating the wines of California winemakers.

This year's 2011 competition should go down as a proud moment for all the wineries in the Sierra Foothills Appellation - more importantly...for the wineries in El Dorado Wine Country.

"An interesting observation that should bring a sense of pride to every Sierra Foothill winery is Napa had 23 red wines (Golds and Double Golds) being tasted for Best of Region. Sonoma had 19 reds, South Central Coast had 12 reds, and California appellation had 25 reds. SIERRA FOOTHILLS HAD 51 GOLD AND DOUBLE GOLD RED WINES!

Tour de Mourvedre: My Totally Expert Wine Tasting Review

Tour de Mourvedre: My Totally Expert Wine Tasting Review

I like my wine like I like my men: full-bodied, fermented and rich.

Unfortunately, I don’t know what any of that means, so I just go with what I like, and say, “Yeah, that’s good. I’ll take some of that. Say, are these cheese nibbles free? Do you have any of those goldfish crackers?”

Because guys like a woman who can carry on a decent conversation.

News10 invited some local bloggers to a preview tasting of the Tour de Mouvedre, which takes place all Independence Day weekend long at participating wineries in El Dorado County, CA.

Check out more photos and continue reading.

Rockin' the Tour de Mourvedre

Rockin' the Tour de Mourvedre

Don't tell anyone, but there are some really great wineries not far from Sacramento. Just a short drive up Highway 50, there are some hidden gems. Last night, I went to the Tour de Mourvedre kickoff at the El Dorado Hills Welcome Center. 10 different wineries were in attendance pouring, Mourvedres (of course) as well as few of their other libations. What is the Tour de Mourvedre? This Independence Day weekend, you can drive around El Dorado County and taste at these wineries. Specials and pairings will be offered. Tastings are usually free, but it would probably be nice of you to buy a bottle in return.

Haven't been adventurous enough to go wine tasting? Let me show you what it's like.

It will probably be crowded, but that's OK. Everyone is there to enjoy themselves, much like they were last night. You will walk up to the people at the bar pouring the wines. Don't be scared. They want you to try their product. Why? Because they want you to buy some.

As someone who actually enrolled in a French class to learn to pronounce the varietals properly, I would love to give you my thoughts,  and observations.

Mourvedre, one of the harder grape names to pronounce, is really good and food friendly.  I enjoy the Rhone varietals and the Rhone blends as well.

A side by side tasting, such as we enjoyed 6/29/11 at the California Welcome Center, El Dorado Hills, is a fine method of discovering the range of flavors that can come from a single grape varietal

Nine wineries, each pouring two or three samples makes for too much of a good thing.  I did not manage to taste everything but all that I did taste was enjoyable if not downrigh
