Turkey Hunting in Madrid

Turkey Hunting in Madrid

Have you ever found yourself in the market for a Thanksgiving turkey in Spain? Well, I have and learned they are even more rare than a café open in the late afternoon.

While studying abroad in England I got to meet up with a friend in Madrid while her ship docked for a few days in Cadiz. We had grand ideas of washing away any homesickness with an American Thanksgiving celebration with friends. As I soon discovered, turkey is geographically native to the Americas and not a common dish in Europe, even on (gasp) what I consider the most sacred holiday of the year! My grandmother told me later she had the same experience while living in Switzerland in the 60's - and Thanksgiving Goose it was!

We quickly got over this travel speed bump and set out to discover the city and find our own feast. As weary travelers we wholly embraced the standstill that overtakes the city at siesta time.

Pairing wine with Halloween chocolate

Pairing wine with Halloween chocolate

Chocolate and wine paired together is a treat I have trouble resisting.  So when I saw that the El Dorado Wine Association put out a list of what wines go best with which chocolate bars, I had to share with my fellow wine lovers:

Here are their suggestions:

Milk Chocolate M & M’s – Malbec
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup – Zinfandel
Snicker’s – Cabernet Sauvignon
Kit Kat – Sparkling Wine

I'm thinking I just may have a little Halloween chocolate/wine pairing party at my house this weekend.  Kit Kats and sparkling wine sound really good together!

Nice Display For a Tortilla

Nice Display For a Tortilla

I found this a little humorous. We're at a joint to eat in Placerville and they brought this out as an appetizer. I'm not poking fun, but I chuckled when this arrived and i had to take a shot of it. They also had taco truck pinatas hanging from the ceiling. I'm getting one of those next time!

Authentic Irish pub opening in El Dorado Hills

I just got back from Ireland just in time to learn that Kinnee O’Reilly’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in El Dorado Hills will open on Wednesday, September 28 in the Montano Shopping Center at White Rock and Latrobe Roads.

Owners Dave and Betsy Wohler will be serving a full lunch and dinner menu, outdoor dining, and an expansive beer, whiskey and cocktail menu.

“It’s been a great experience to watch this grow from dream to reality,” said Co-Owner Dave Wohler.

Who's Your Dude is back at TooGood Winery

Who's Your Dude is back at TooGood Winery

Who’s your Dude is back and better than ever at TooGood Estate Winery.

The wine I’m talking about is perfect for people like me who like bold, rich reds, but can’t decide which one is their favorite.  That’s because Who’s Your Dude is TooGood’s inspired blend of Cabernet Franc, Primitivo and Zinfandel.

The winery describes the flavor as “loaded with ripe fruit aromas of Boysenberry, black current, strawberry jam and mint.  I’m not sure I can taste all that, but I do know it’s medium bodied.

This velvety red wine goes great with pork loin, grilled lamb, shoulder chops, teriyaki burgers or a rare thick cut of filet mignon.

Right now the winery is in the middle of their release party right now so you can get the wine at discounted price.  Release party ends on September 20.
