All aboard for Halloween fun…“Spookomotive” trains to treat Old Sac visitors in October

Back by popular demand, California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum & Foundation will once again offer engaging and entertaining “Spookomotive” train rides for three weekends beginning in mid-October. With VIP First Class train rides also available, “Spookomotive” trains operate hourly from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays beginning the weekend of October 15-16 and continuing on October 22-23 and October 29-30, 2016. Each operating weekend the Spookomotive will have a special theme, and the experience includes exciting on board entertainment and a tasty Halloween treat. Train ride guests are encouraged to get in the spirit and dress up according to the fun weekly themes that include: Superheroes & Villains (October 15-16), Pirates & Princesses (October 22-23) and Witches & Wizards (October 29-30).

In addition to its fascinating Gold Rush past, the Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and historic sites that offer visitors the chance to explore California’s fine art, history, science, and wildlife treasures all year long. In October, many of the 30 members of Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) are offering fun Halloween, Día de Los Muertos and harvest-related events and activities sure to get guests in a festive fall spirit, including:

A center for culture, creativity and vibrancy, Midtown Sacramento is an exciting 2nd Saturday Art Walk destination where local art galleries and other participating businesses collaborate to host a popular evening open house each month. Midtown guests will enjoy viewing art exhibits, participating in hands-on activities, sharing aspirations on a “wish wall,” meeting local artists, sampling food and wine, listening to live music and more.

Continuing a popular series of fun and interactive “Hands on History” activities offered each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) will present a special “Hands on History: The Real Gold in California” event on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Fort visitors will be delighted to see the recently completed restoration of the historic walls and gates plus have the opportunity to step back in time to appreciate the important role agriculture played in California’s early development. Coinciding with the city’s "Farm-to-Fork" movement, Fort guests will learn why the early focus on seasonal and locally sourced agriculture was essential to survival.

Auto Museum presents Car Trek,  a one-day celebration to honor 50th “Auto-versary” of Star Trek

Calling all trekkies! 

Beam down to the California Automobile Museum on Saturday, September 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as they welcome all lifeforms to Car Trek in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek. The Museum will be transformed into a Starship of sorts complete with a BORG station, Starfleet officers, Kingon warriors and even a Fleet Bar. On this special one-day “auto-versary” event, Museum visitors are encouraged to get in the Star Trek spirit and come dressed in their favorite character costumes (all phasers must be set to stun). Visitors will enjoy a family-fun mission adventure featuring some of the cars that have appeared in past episodes and movies. Some examples of the special vehicles on display include the following:

As part of the fun and interpretive Old Sacramento Living History Program, the eerie and ever popular one-hour “Ghost Tours” return this October! 

Old Sacramento guests will have the opportunity to relive 19th century lore. Guides (and ghosts) will relate tantalizing narratives about the deaths of colorful citizens from Sacramento’s history.  And guests will have the chance to see these not-so-dead Sacramentans. Departing every 30 minutes from the Sacramento History Museum, daring and inquisitive guests will be led through Old Sacramento’s infamous locales to experience the darker side of California’s history.

Three local museums to offer free admission to Smithsonian Magazine’s “Museum Day Live!”

Three Sacramento area museums are joining the Smithsonian magazine “Museum Day Live!” nationwide effort by offering free admission to advance registrants all day on Saturday, September 24, 2016. The three participating local museums include the following:  Aerospace Museum of California, California Museum, and Maidu Museum & Historic Site.  The mission of the annual effort is to provide an opportunity for consumers throughout the United States to enjoy and share in our dynamic heritage and cultural institutions for free.
