American River Conservancy & Mother Lode River Center Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day

National Get Outdoors (GO) Day celebrates America’s Great Outdoors and encourages youth and their families to spend time outside, exploring the natural world. This year, Mother Lode River Center and the American River Conservancy team up on Sunday, June 9th, to promote outdoor recreation in the greater Sacramento region.

National GO Day helps to combat the effects of indoor, inactive lifestyles which are fueling the nation’s obesity epidemic and threatening the health of future generations. It is an opportunity to influence lifestyles, especially among youth, in ways that emphasize physical, mental and other benefits derived from outdoor recreation in the Great Outdoors.

National Get Outdoors Day is celebrated throughout the country at over 130 sites. Locally, the Coloma-Lotus Valley plays host to its own celebration of the event on Sunday, June 9th. From 10 am to 3 pm, Mother Lode River Center opens its riverside campground to families looking for FREE, fun outdoor activities. Mother Lode’s whitewater river camp is located along the banks of the South Fork American River, just a couple of miles from Lotus, California. Families are encouraged to visit and learn more about the recreational opportunities available in our region. Youth and adults can participate in their high and low ropes challenge course, be challenged on the climbing wall, take flight into the trees on their 370-ft long zip line, or participate in workshops on gardening and sustainability. More information about the GO event at Mother Lode River Center can be found at www.malode.com.

Later on that day and just a mile down the road, another event celebrates the Great Outdoors. From 3 pm to 10 pm, the American River Conservancy hosts the 10th annual American River TrailFest. A fundraising event for local multi-use trails, TrailFest is a family-friendly event that features live music, a kids’ zone activity tent, BBQ dinner, live and silent auction and local wine and beer. Tickets for TrailFest are available online at www.arconservancy.org/trailfest2013. $30/adult; $15/youth and under 7 are FREE.

American River Conservancy builds an enduring ethic of care by providing environmental education and outdoor recreation for adults and children alike, and by promoting habitat restoration, trail building and ongoing stewardship projects with volunteers.

Proceeds from TrailFest benefit the American River Trail Campaign, an ARC fund that supports trail building and maintenance along the upper tributaries of the American River. This year’s event raises funds for a new multi-use trailhead facility and additional 1 ½ miles of new trail near the western end of the South Fork American River Trail at Folsom Lake. Additionally, ARC is working on a connector trail that will link up Henningson Lotus Park with the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park.

Join the American River Conservancy and Mother Lode River Center in celebrating our local rivers and trails and the recreational opportunities they provide.
