Ex-deputy makes plea deal in fraud, theft case

PLACERVILLE, CA - The former president of the El Dorado County Deputy Sheriff's Association has pleaded no contest to embezzlement, elder fraud, perjury and white collar crime charges.

Donald Atkinson will also be sentenced to five years in state prison and must pay $438,348 in restitution, according to the plea agreement reacher with the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office.

Atkinson was accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his victims from 2005-2011. An investigation by  county prosecutors and the state attorney general's office alleged Atkinson falsified documents, submitted forged documents to the deputy sheriff's group and pocketed money he claimed was for charitable purposes. Rather, Atkinson allegedly used the money he took to pay his rent and the rent of a woman he was dating.

The probe also found Atkinson stole $100,000 from an elderly adult. He told the victim he needed the money to buy a photography business. According to the investigation, Atkins falsified a contract and never used the funds for their intended purpose.

Atkinson was a sheriff's deputy and sergeant with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department from 1994 to September 2011 when he retired.

The plea deal additionally stipulates while Atkinson serves his prison term, he must pay $1,000 per month from his retirement payments to his victims.
