Sutter’s Fort to present “Hands on History: The Donner Party and Westward Migration”

Continuing a series of fun and interactive “Hands on History” activities offered each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) and Friends of Sutter’s Fort are proud to present a special “Hands on History: The Donner Party and Westward Migration” event on Saturday, November 18, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fort visitors will be delighted to see the recently completed restoration of the historic walls, gates, blacksmith shop and current restoration of the interior walls plus have the opportunity to step back in time to learn more about the Donner Party and western migration in general.

Aerospace Museum to debut interactive new TAKE FLIGHT Exhibit

The Aerospace Museum of California is proud to present an interactive new exhibit titled TAKE FLIGHT that will be available for guests to explore and enjoy from October 17, 2017 through January 9, 2018. With a variety of dynamic elements and multiple activity stations, guests of all ages will begin to understand the fundamentals needed to achieve flight. The new TAKE FLIGHT exhibit will occupy approximately 2,000-square feet of space on the ground floor inside the impressive Museum.

A center for culture, creativity and vibrancy, Midtown Sacramento is an exciting 2nd Saturday Art Walk destination where local art galleries and other participating businesses collaborate to host a popular evening open house each month. Midtown guests will enjoy viewing art exhibits, participating in hands-on activities, meeting local artists, sampling food and wine, listening to live music and more.  On Saturday, October 14, 2017, a sampling of the offerings presented by Midtown galleries and businesses include the following:

  • ARTasylum (2017 I Street #B) – an artist studio, gallery, and boutique in Midtown – presents a special show titled "October Moon” along with an art demonstration, “meet the artists” opportunity, music, complimentary refreshments, an art project and art class giveaway;

 

Six local museums to offer free admission to Smithsonian Magazine’s “Museum Day Live!”

Six local museums to offer free admission to Smithsonian Magazine’s “Museum Day Live!”

Six Sacramento area museums are joining the Smithsonian magazine “Museum Day Live!” nationwide effort by offering free admission to advance registrants all day on Saturday, September 23, 2017. The six participating local museums include the following:  Aerospace Museum of California, California Automobile Museum, California Museum, California State Railroad Museum, Maidu Museum & Historic Site and SSVMS Museum of Medical History*.  The mission of the annual effort is to provide an opportunity for consumers throughout the United States to enjoy and share in our dynamic heritage and cultural institutions for free. New this year – and of special interest to educators -- Museum Day Live! will feature special interactive lesson plans created by Smithsonian in partnership with Microsoft using Minecraft: Education Edition.

More exciting preservation efforts underway soon at Sutter’s Fort, this time on the interior walls

After the completion of a number of exciting restoration and rehabilitation projects at Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) in recent years – including of the iconic exterior walls and gates, seismic stabilization of the Central Building, upgrades to the pathways, exterior lighting of the interior courtyards, and renovation of the blacksmith shop – California State Parks and nonprofit partner Friends of Sutter’s Fort are proud to announce even more preservation efforts will resume in September, this time on the Fort’s interior walls. This latest rehabilitation project will total approximately $115,000, which has been funded by the Friends of Sutter’s Fort and their generous donors.
